1964 FIAT 500D

This 1964 Fiat 500D is a charming Italian classic presented in good condition, which would make it a fantastic base for some cosmetic refurbishment. It is powered by a 499cc two-cylinder engine from a later 500F, producing around 18bhp, coupled to a four-speed manual transmission with synchromesh. The odometer indicates 53,864 miles from new, which is unwarranted but likely accurate.

Understood to have been completed at the Mirafiori factory in February 1964, this 500D is an original right-hand drive car that was delivered to New Zealand. It has the same specification as UK market models of the time, including the speedometer with a miles-per-hour readout. The car has therefore spent its life in a warmer and sunnier climate than most right-hand drive examples, and remains in structurally superb condition as a result.

From the late 1990s through to 2016, the little Fiat resided in a large private collection in Auckland. It was then acquired by a new owner, who had the car recommissioned with an overhaul of the suspension, brakes, and drivetrain. He then re-registered the vehicle and put it through the mandatory ‘Warrant of Fitness’ test (the equivalent of the UK MOT). The car was later imported to the UK, with taxes and duties paid, and was re-registered in August 2019.

The car presents in very straight condition, with solid original floors and good shut lines and panel gaps. It is understood that the sills were replaced when still in New Zealand. The paintwork has been refreshed at some point in the past, and the seller describes the finish as being in fair order, with numerous small marks and blemishes around the body that can be seen in the full photo gallery below.

The metal trims are in serviceable condition, and would perhaps benefit from a good polishing. There are also a few dents and spots of tarnishing on the bumpers. On the roof, the folding canvas is in great shape, with no rips or holes - though one of the retaining clips is missing. The car sits on 12-inch steel wheels, colour-coded to the bodywork, which have the typical nicks around the rims and some surface corrosion.

The cabin presents very well indeed, having been re-trimmed in recent years with tan vinyl for the seats and door panels. The material remains in superb order, with contrasting cream top panels and piping. The black carpet was fitted in 2019 and is in as-new condition. Ahead of the driver is the original thin-rimmed steering wheel, which has a small crack in the moulding, but is otherwise very smart. All of the switchgear is undamaged, and there are no known faults.

Mechanically, this car is in strong condition, fitted with a later 499cc motor from a 500F that is known to be a slightly more responsive engine, with an upgraded airbox and larger starter too. The last maintenance was carried out in June 2019, serviced by the seller using parts supplied by Ricambio International. The engine oil and filter were renewed, along with the spark plugs, HT ignition leads, and throttle cable. New bumper brackets and seals were also fitted, as well as aluminium kick plates and chrome wiper blades.

Two previous ‘Warrant of Fitness’ certificates are included in the paperwork, with the most recent dated to December 2018 at 53,832 miles. The car is exempt from annual MOT testing in the UK on the basis of age. The tyres are all in good condition, with approximately 5mm of tread.

Accompanying the car is a certificate of origin from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles that substantiates its correct chassis number, age and specification. The test certificates from New Zealand are also present, along with the last overseas registration document, and receipts from Ricambio International.

This Fiat 500D is a straight and solid example of an iconic Italian classic. Having spent the majority of its life in the climate of New Zealand, this right-hand-drive car is presented in good condition, and is a great foundation for further cosmetic restoration. It has bags of ‘la dolce vita’ character, a tuneful two-cylinder motor, and is certain to delight its next owner wherever they choose to drive it.
