1964 FERRARI 330 GT 2+2 SERIES I BY PININFARINA

This Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 is a highly original example of an elegant 1960s grand tourer, presented in its original factory colours and reported to be running well, which is now in need of some cosmetic refurbishment. Under the bonnet is a 4.0-litre Colombo V12 engine - understood to be its original, numbers-matching motor - paired with a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive. The odometer indicates 78,809 km (48,969 miles), which is unwarranted but may be correct. It is now an EU taxes-paid vehicle.

An early Series I ‘four headlight’ car, this 330 GT was sold new within its home market of Italy, understood to have been supplied via well-known dealer Crepaldi in Milan. It later found its way into the collection of Peter Monteverdi, who had briefly been the franchise holder for Ferrari in Switzerland, where it remained until the early 1990s.

It is believed to have spent much of the early 2000s in the collection of shipping magnate Andreas Ugland, displayed as part of his Cayman Motor Museum, until it was sold on to the current vendor in 2013. This gentleman has since seen to the mechanicals, acquiring a new cylinder head from Ferrari, and bringing the iconic V12 back to good health. It was re-registered in the UK in February 2019, and has been used sparingly since then. The vendor reports that the history file confirms it as a numbers-matching example.

The car is understood to have had a sympathetic restoration at some point in the past, but retains its original factory colours of Grigio Argento over a Nero leather interior. Today, the body looks straight and with good panel fit, but the paintwork is described as being in generally poor condition. It has lost some of its lustre over the years, and there are now some visible cracks and bubbles in the finish - notably around both doors, the driver’s side in particular, as well as above the sills and around the fuel filler cap and boot lid.

Its rear bumper is dented in the centre, while the front bumper is dented on the driver’s side, but the chrome generally presents in good order and with a pleasing shine. The badging and other body trims appear correct, and its four Marchal headlight lenses also look original. Body and window seals are ageing and starting to perish in places, so would of course benefit from replacement when the paintwork is attended to. It rides on 15-inch Borrani wire wheels, which have slightly corroded wires and knock-off hubs, but which are generally sound.

The cabin is believed to retain most of its original upholstery and trim, though it may previously have been re-connolised in the past. The leather is worn and slightly discoloured in places, but there are no rips or tears in the material. The headlining looks to be in excellent condition. Series I left-hand-drive cars had metal dashboards painted in black, which this car retains. It also has the full complement of Veglia instrument dials.

The last scheduled maintenance was carried out in September 2020, which consisted of a basic service, engine oil and filter change, completed at Geoff Page Racing. Other maintenance work during the owner’s tenure has also been carried out at the same workshop, including fitment of a new cylinder head from Ferrari. The vendor reports that the car is running well, and that fundamentally the focus of refurbishment for the next owner will be on the bodywork and paint.

Accompanying the car is some older paperwork, including photographs as well as some verification of original parts and features.

This Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 is a wonderful Italian classic, with elegant Pininfarina styling and an evocative Colombo V12 engine to make brisk progress when touring. With numerous 1960s Ferraris now well out of reach from all but the wealthiest of collectors, this is a great opportunity to acquire a smart 12-cylinder car that now needs some attention and refurbishment to bring it back to a very high standard.
