1964 AUSTIN MINI COOPER S MK1

This 1964 Austin Mini Cooper S is an excellent example of the iconic ‘hot’ Mini, benefitting from numerous period upgrades and a recent full restoration. Powered by a rare and desirable ‘Appendix J’ 1275cc four-cylinder engine from Alexander Conversions, the front wheels are driven through a four-speed manual transmission. This example is believed to have covered 110,707 miles from new.

Originally registered in 1964, this Cooper S was upgraded by Alexander Conversions in 1967, being fitted with the ‘Appendix J’ engine and suspension upgrades. Designed to increase the car’s performance for rallying or racing, many of these parts are retained on the vehicle to this day, and are now extremely sought after. In 2013, the car was subject to a full restoration, including a full respray into Old English White using period-correct cellulose paint.

The exterior condition of this Cooper S is truly impressive. Apart from the usual minor smattering of stone chips to the front end, the Old English White paintwork is in excellent condition and free from scratches or cracks. The bodywork is all straight with even panel gaps, and the chrome trim is in great condition throughout.

Inside, the unusual red and grey interior presents in superb order, with original or correct type materials used throughout the cabin. The seat covers have some slight creasing and bunching, but are otherwise in great shape with no rips or tears. While there is little in the way of creature comforts - the reproduction factory record notes the vehicle as having a heater fitted as an optional extra - everything is working as it should, with no reported faults.

Under the bonnet of this Cooper S sits the 1275cc ‘Appendix J’ engine, which was fitted by Alexander Conversions in 1967. These conversions were noted as being “identical to those used by Works drivers during the 1964 rally season” on the documentation, making this a truly special Cooper S. The engine bay presents very well, with the block and its ancillaries all in smart condition with no known faults or issues.

During 2013, the car was subject to a thorough restoration. During this process, the shell was completely stripped and vapour blasted, prior to being painted with a cellulose finish. The front end was completely removed and replaced with genuine new-old-stock BMC panels, including both inner and outer A-panels, wings and the front panel, which is the later MK1 type. The front floor pans have been replaced with seamless panels in the correct pattern pressings, the inner and outer sills have been replaced, and the complete heel board has been renewed. In addition to this, the rear valance has been replaced and the doors have been reskinned using genuine outer panels.

The last service took place during October 2020, and was carried out by Regency Autos. During this, the carburettors were also re-balanced for optimum performance. Prior to this, the last services took place in July 2019 and February 2016. The car has been run on a dynamometer, and resulted in a recorded power output of 86.3bhp and 123.2Nm of torque.

The most recent MOT test was carried out on 21 November 2017, resulting in the car passing first time. It is exempt from mandatory annual testing on the basis of age. All four tyres on the car are nearly new Blockley items, and a full spare set of white steel wheels and tyres is included with the vehicle.

Presenting in wonderful condition throughout, having been recently restored and with fantastic period ‘Appendix J’ modifications, this Austin Cooper S is a truly special example of the 1960s ‘hot hatch’. Complete with the original Austin driver’s handbook, a wealth of invoices and correspondence, and a number of photographs of the engine build, this is a great opportunity to own a charming and sought-after classic.
