1964 AUSTIN HEALEY 3000 MK3 (BJ8)

This Austin Healey 3000 is a usable example of the ‘Mk3’ generation of this classic sports car, though would now benefit from some cosmetic refurbishment. Under the bonnet is a 2.9-litre straight-six, rated at 150bhp when new, driving the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission. The odometer reads 88,895 miles.

First registered on 22 September 1964, this UK-market model has been owned by the vendor for the past seven years. In many places, the car appears to be highly original, though it is understood to have had a colour change to its current light blue hue.

The paintwork is described as being in fair condition, and the photo gallery below presents a clear view of the various blemishes and imperfections in the finish. There are small holes are both front corners of the bonnet, which are assumed to be from previous leather strap fasteners. Genuine Lucas light lenses are in place around the body, while the chromework is in fair order, with more noticeable flaking around the front grille.

The manually-operated soft top can be lowered and raised as intended, though the rear window needs replacing, and there are some smaller patches of damage to the material elsewhere. It rides on 15-inch black wire wheels, which have some chips around the rims, but are generally sound. An original hard top is available, but requires repairs and a respray to look presentable.

Inside, the Austin Healey’s upholstery is most likely original, and is described as being in poor condition and in need of a professional re-trim. There are large sections of the covering missing from the driver’s seat, with cracking and splits in the seats elsewhere. Blemishes are visible in the lacquered wood dashboard elements, which would benefit from refurbishment, and there is also some pitting in the metal switchgear panels and bezels. The buttons and controls are reported to be functional, though the windscreen wipers are poor.

This Mk3 was last serviced in February 2018 at 88,835 miles by Bedford Body Services. This entailed replacement of the engine oil and oil filter. Prior to this, services were carried out in July 2016 at 88,715 miles and in April 2015 at 88,316 miles.

The most recent MOT test was on 1 December 2020 at 88,895 miles. This was a first-time pass with no advisories. Its wheels are shod in Firestone tyres, which are reported to have around 6mm of tread at the front, while the rear tyres are close to needing replacement.

This Austin Healey 3000 Mk3 could be the perfect project for 2021, as it is reported to be in good running order, though evidently requires some extensive cosmetic restoration to be brought back to its former glory. As the BJ8 model, it benefits from the more powerful engine with higher lift camshaft and improved carburettors, so this is a worthy candidate for some discerning refurbishment. Once rejuvenated, it should prove to be a charming and thoroughly enjoyable 1960s British sports car to enjoy on weekend jaunts or continental tours.
