1964 ASTON MARTIN DB5

This 1964 Aston Martin DB5 is an outstanding example of the elegant British sporting GT, which boasts impeccable provenance and has been restored to concours standards. On opening to the front-hinged bonnet, you are met by the immaculately detailed 4.0-litre DOHC straight-six engine, which produces 282bhp and is coupled to the five-speed ZF manual transmission. The odometer indicates 41,518 miles.

First registered on 1 February 1964, this DB5 was supplied by official Aston Martin agents Mill Car Garages of County Durham to Mr D Levey of Leveys Wallpaper Stores, Northumberland, who specified its Goodwood Green over tan colour scheme.

Its history then took a fascinating turn, after it was acquired by Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan in 1986 for his personal use in Switzerland, and was treated to a detailed restoration prior to being exported. It is understood that the Aga Khan enjoyed the car until February 1998, at which point it was sold to another Swiss resident, who kept it for 16 years until it was acquired by a UK-based collector car specialist in 2015.

The car was then fully restored by Aston Martin specialist Pugsley & Lewis, who tended to its bodywork, paint and mechanical components, as well as fully retrimming the interior in Connolly Vaumol ‘Luxan Tan’ leather and beige Wilton carpeting. This astonishing DB5 is now offered for sale by its current owner, who acquired it in 2016.

Today, the alloy ‘Superleggera’ bodywork remains in outstanding condition, and the Goodwood Green finish is impeccable, with the front end having been covered in paint protection film by Topaz Detailing after the car was resprayed.

The car’s brightwork and other trim is also in excellent order, having been re-chromed when the car was restored, and both the engine bay and underbody are in exemplary condition, having been prepared to concours standards. This DB5 sits on a set of 15-inch chromed wire wheels with Aston Martin three-eared knock-off hub nuts, which show no signs of damage, deterioration or blemishes of any kind.

After stepping into the cabin, you are transported back to 1964, thanks to this classic Aston’s fully retrimmed interior, which the seller states is in ‘as-new’ condition. Rich Luxan Tan Connolly leather covers the seats, door cards and A-pillars, while the floors, transmission tunnel and lower door cards are clad in beige Wilton carpeting.

The upholstery is unmarked throughout, as are the handsome three-spoke wood-rimmed steering wheel, black Smiths gauges, and the dark Perspex sun visors. A period-correct Blaupunkt radio is also fitted, completing this DB5’s time-warp appearance. The seller states that all of the car’s interior switches and electrical items work without fault.

This charming British classic’s last three services were carried out by Aston Martin Works, with the most recent being in October 2020. During its extensive restoration in 2016, specialist Pugsley & Lewis fully rebuilt the car’s engine and converted it to use unleaded fuel, with the clutch being replaced at the same time.

Although it is exempt due to its age, the car’s last MOT test was conducted on 23 July 2020 at 41,191 miles, which perhaps unsurprisingly resulted in a first-time pass with no advisories whatsoever. The seller states that all four of the Avon radial tyres are in as-new condition.

This DB5 will be accompanied by a raft of documents, including full details of its restoration, a copy of its factory build specifications on the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, service history and a custom leather binder.

Unquestionably the marque’s most famous classic model, the Aston Martin DB5 is also one of its most beautiful, boasting elegant sports styling with impressive in-period performance. Fully restored to concours standards and counting Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan among its previous owners, this fabulous DB5 will surely be the ‘crown jewel’ in any collection.
