1964 ALFA ROMEO GIULIA TI SUPER

One of only 501 examples of the Alfa Romeo Giulia TI Super produced, this classic homologation special is a smart example of the breed, which benefits from a full mechanical overhaul and is eligible for a wide range of historic race events. Under the bonnet is the fully rebuilt 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine, which is fed by two twin-choke Weber 45 DCOE carburettors and drives the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission.

First registered in 1964, this example is number 208 of the 501 cars which Alfa Romeo built to homologate the TI Super for the 1963 FIA Touring Car Championship, with the model having the honour of being the first car to leave the Portello factory wearing the now famous Quadrifoglio on its front wings and tail. The vendor acquired the car 12 years ago, and has entered it into various historic racing events during their ownership.

While the car’s mechanical components have been extensively refurbished and modified, its characteristically boxy bodywork remains largely untouched. Overall, this TI Super’s exterior is in fair condition, with some minor dents and ripples to its panels, and chips and bubbles on its resprayed white paintwork. The exterior brightwork is in good order, and has a pleasing shine. Furthermore, the light lenses are free of any chips or cracks, and the various decals which the car has acquired during its time with the seller make its motorsport provenance clear to see. The car rides on a non-original set of 15-inch silver-painted steel wheels, which feature various scratches and blemishes on their surfaces, but are structurally sound. The original alloy wheels are also included.

Moving into the spartan cabin, almost all of the car’s original upholstery and trim items have been removed, with a welded-in roll cage and a Sparco Evo Plus bucket seat fitted in their place. Ahead, the steering wheel has been replaced with a black suede-trimmed Sparco item, which is in great shape, while the dashboard has been remodelled and fitted with a number of auxiliary gauges and toggle switches.

In line with motorsport regulations, the carpets have been stripped out, and a hand-held fire extinguisher is mounted in the space previously occupied by the passenger seat. Given that this is a competitive classic race car, its interior does feature various marks, scuffs and scratches, but this does not detract from its functionality. All of the interior switches and electrical items currently work without fault.

Supplied in fantastic running order, this Giulia’s various mechanical components have either been refurbished or replaced to make it as competitive as possible. Classic Alfa Romeo specialist Formula GT Munich has fully rebuilt and tuned its 1.6-litre engine to 160hp, and also tended to its dual Weber 45 carburettors and exhaust manifold. Furthermore, during the car’s restoration the front axle was completely overhauled, and the brake callipers, brake lines, bearings, springs, dampers and bushes were renewed with uprated items.

The car will be accompanied by a wide array of spare parts, including a replacement gearbox, axles, and some body panels. The seller is also supplying its FIA papers, DMSB-Carpass and a letter from Archivio Storico Alfa Romeo, which confirms its identity as a genuine TI Super. It also comes with a German vehicle registration document with road approval.

A rare sight on the road and track alike, the Alfa Romeo Giulia TI Super represents a significant chapter in the marque’s history, and good examples such as this are becoming increasingly hard to find. Presented in smart overall condition, and benefitting from a mechanical overhaul and regular maintenance, this charming Italian is eligible for numerous historic motorsport events, where its well-sorted engine and running gear will be able to show off their full capabilities.
