1963 MEYERS MANX

This Meyers Manx is a highly original example of the quintessential beach buggy, benefiting from a restoration carried out in 2013. Utilising a flat-four engine from a VW Beetle, bored out in period to 1.8 litres, the Manx drives its rear wheels via a four-speed manual gearbox. The odometer reads an indicated 1,335 miles, though this is not warranted.

First registered in 1963, this Manx has been in the possession of the current vendor for the past four years. Built on the chassis of a 1963 VW Beetle, this example was assembled by Haddock, the storied California-based fabricator. The car was imported to the UK and re-registered with the DVLA in June 2017.

The vendor states that the Manx benefited from a mechanical and cosmetic restoration at a cost of around £32,000 in 2013. It remains honest to its ‘bare bones’ original specification, with the only concession to modernity being the use of Securon seatbelts.

The Manx’s durable fibreglass body features the original eye-popping gel coat of metallic purple paint from 1963. It remains in very good order throughout, with only minor scratches and stone chips indicative of gentle use to date. Chromework including the original front and rear Meyers Manx bumpers presents very well, with an EMPI skid plate protecting the engine during off-road use. The lights, windscreen and badging are all present and remain free of damage. It rides on bespoke steel wheels with VW hubcaps, staggered in size to 14-inch at the front and 15-inch at the rear.

Inside, the sparse cabin remains in good order, with the steering wheel, dashboard dials, pedals and seats taken from the VW Beetle donor car. The heated front seats show the slightest sights of use, while the rear bench is also removable to provide more storage space. The footwell displays some minor scuffs, in keeping with the car’s original rugged leisure purpose. The vendor adds that everything remains functional, with no warning lights illuminated on the dashboard.

The most recent service was carried out on 1 July 2020 at 1,237 miles by Flatlands Engineering. This saw the engine oil replaced along with the spark plugs, HT leads, distributor cap, adjustment of the points and replacement of the condenser. In addition to this work, the fuel filter and fuel pipes were replaced, while the brakes were inspected and adjusted. The offside rear wheel cylinder was replaced, as were the rear hub seals. The engine and suspension were then lubricated in relevant areas to prevent corrosion, while the lighting and electrical systems were correctly set up.

The most recent MOT test was on 10 April 2018. This was a first-time pass with zero advisories, and as the Manx is over 40 years old, it is therefore exempt from both the MOT test or payment of the road fund licence. Riding on a set of BFGoodrich Radial T/A tyres, these are in good condition with ample tread remaining.

This Meyers Manx is a rare opportunity to acquire an iconic beach buggy, authenticated by brand founder Bruce Meyers himself. Combining open-top motoring with light off-road capability, the Manx would make for an enjoyable summertime toy and a great addition to any classic car collection.
