1963 JAGUAR MKII 3.8 - MANUAL O/D

KEY FACTS

  • This 1963 Jaguar MK2 is a fantastic previously restored example of the classic sports saloon, which remains in outstanding condition throughout.
  • Understood to have had the 'Coombs' louvred bonnet and cut-away rear arches from new.
  • Under the bonnet sits a 3.8-litre inline-six which drives the rear wheels through a manual four-speed Moss transmission with overdrive.
  • Impressive maintenance history on file.
  • Extensively restored by Duncan Hamilton during 2005.

 EQUIPMENT AND OPTIONS

  • It is believed that this MK2 was fitted with the rare Coombs louvred bonnet and cut-away rear arches from new. While this has not been officially validated, there is paperwork supporting this claim in the history folder, where it is recorded that the original owner’s son recalled the car having these features when initially delivered.
  • In addition to the Coombs-style bodywork, this vehicle has also been fitted with seat restraints, LED dash lights, and a vintage-look modern stereo unit with DAB radio capability.
  • Included with the vehicle is a good file of paperwork. The heritage certificate, original handbook and period-correct (but not original) tool roll are all also included, along with an invoice from the most recent and extensive programme of works.

CONDITION

  • The vehicle is in superb overall condition, though there is a small dent on the bonnet and another small indentation below the rear bumper.
  • The Opalescent Golden Sand paintwork is in very good shape following its prior restoration, with some stone chips to the front end along with an area of discolouration on the bonnet which is visible from certain angles.
  • While the chrome detailing is generally in very good condition, the front bumper has a couple of painted areas, but would be straightforward to refinish.
  • Inside, the cabin of this MK2 is in near-pristine condition throughout as a consequence of a high-quality new BAS interior being fitted in 2019with only some minor flaking to the varnish of the woodwork at the perimeter of the headlining. Everything else appears genuinely immaculate, and the upgraded stereo retains a period-correct look. Most of the original interior also comes with the car (although it is rather worn).
  • There are no known faults with the vehicle, and no warning lights on the dashboard.
  • The most recent MOT exam took place on 05 February 2021, and resulted in a clean pass with no advisories.

 SERVICE HISTORY

  • The latest maintenance visit was completed in March 2021, carried out by Alex’s Autos of Pluckley. The vendor had told the workshop to “address anything that possibly needs attention.”
  • The work carried out included a full gearbox rebuild including the overdrive unit, replacement seals in the slave cylinder, fitment of rear seat restraints, light welding to the offside front chassis, and a replacement rear axle input shaft oil seal.

Full breakdown of work carried out at latest service:

SUMMARY

In spite of its restoration taking place over 15 years ago, this Jaguar MK2 3.8 with overdrive is still in wonderful condition for its age and presents very well indeed. Benefitting from a new interior in 2019, a recent and comprehensive maintenance visit – including a gearbox rebuild – and complete with its heritage certificate on file, this handsome sports saloon would make a fine addition to any collection of British classics.
