1962 PORSCHE 356 B 1600S ROADSTER

Lot Description

KEY FACTS

  • A rare ‘twin-grille’ T6-generation 356 B 1600S Roadster, presented in excellent condition throughout and benefitting from prior restoration.
  • Its original engine was upgraded to a 90bhp ‘616/7’ flat-four in period, which drives the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission.
  • Believed to be one of approximately 249 examples built by D’Ieteren Frères.
  • First registered in Rochester, New York on 12 January 1962, this 356 B was later acquired by a collector in Hawaii, where it remained for a number of years before being imported to the UK.

EQUIPMENT AND OPTIONS

  • This 1600S’ original 75bhp ‘616/12’ flat-four engine was replaced with a 90bhp 616/7 unit in period.
  • Originally finished in Ruby Red with a black leather interior, the car was resprayed in black and its interior was retrimmed with beige leatherette at its second owner’s request.
  • Inside, the dashboard has been replaced with the more driver-focused item from a 356 B Speedster, and a Nardi steering wheel has been fitted in place of the original.
  • This 356 B benefits from a prior restoration, with the odometer reading 13,400 miles since this was completed.
  • The car will be accompanied by a folder of documents detailing its history, as well as its original handbook and various invoices for its past maintenance.
  • The original build sheet detailing the factory specification is also present.

CONDITION

  • No known bodywork damage.
  • Previously resprayed to a good standard, the black paintwork presents well, with a few small stone chips and light swirl marks around the car.
  • Retrimmed in beige leatherette, the interior is very smart, though there is some wear on the piping on both of the seats, and a mark across the driver’s seatback, as well as some small blemishes on the steering wheel’s wooden rim, in line with the car’s age and use.
  • There are no known electrical or mechanical faults.
  • The car’s last recorded MOT test was conducted on 21 May 2017 at 13,323 miles, which resulted in a clean, first-time pass. While it is exempt from mandatory testing on the basis of age, the seller is aiming to have a fresh 12-month certificate on the car ready for handover to the next owner.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • This 356’s most recent maintenance was carried out in 2019 by Hexagon Classics. As well as carrying out a full service, Hexagon also rebuilt the carburettor and alternator and overhauled the braking system.
  • Prior to this, Hexagon Classics maintained the car on a regular basis for the present owner.
  • A new clutch assembly was fitted in 2017.
