1962 PORSCHE 356 B 1600 - LHD

This Porsche 356 B is a charming 1960s sports car, which has received significant cosmetic and mechanical refurbishment since arriving in the UK 11 years ago. It is powered by the 1600cc air-cooled flat-four, producing around 60bhp, coupled to a four-speed manual transmission. The odometer currently reads 63,440 miles. Its engine number is 608675, which is understood to be the original numbers-matching motor.

When the car was offered for sale around eight years ago, it was reported to be in highly original condition, even down to having the date-stamped wheels. It is believed to have originally been a Dutch market car, but subsequently spent time in the US, before being imported from California to the UK in 2009.

Its second owner intended to make a few improvements to the car, but this turned into a more extensive cosmetic restoration, incorporating a full respray and fresh coatings to the underbody, as well as re-chroming and replacement of various exterior trims.

Today, its paintwork is reported to be in generally excellent condition, though the vendor reports some slight discolouration on the passenger door. While seven years have passed from the time it was resprayed in red from the previous Heron Grey, the car has only covered a few hundred miles since then. New gold badges were fitted during the refurbishment, along with new door handles and new side mouldings and bumper trims.

The bumper mounts, wheel trims, headlight bezels and window trims were all re-chromed, and the wheels were powder-coated. Underneath, the pre-existing underseals were stripped back to the bare panels, and it was recoated with black stone guard paint. The front battery tray was replaced, along with the exhaust tips.

Inside, the black upholstery is in superb order, with no rips or tears in the material, and exhibiting only modest wear. The instrument gauges, control knobs, gear shift and steering wheel all look to be original, with a handsome patina across the plastic and metal finishes. The interior clock is not working, but otherwise there are no reported faults. It is trimmed with black carpeting throughout, which presents in very good order.

The last scheduled maintenance was in August 2020 at DTH Classics, when the car received new spark plugs, points, ignition condenser, and rebuilt carburettors. The valve clearances were checked and reset, new rocker cover gaskets were fitted, a new fuel filter was installed, and all of the steering and suspension joints were greased. The fuel tank has also recently been removed for cleaning out and painting, most fuel lines have been replaced, and new tyres have been fitted - including for the spare wheel.

Its engine bay was given a cosmetic overhaul in 2013, when the owner at the time fitted new ignition leads and a distributor cap, powder-coated the heat shields, re-chromed the brackets, and fitted a new oil canister and new rear engine scuttle panel. In 2010, at approximately 62,295 miles, the car received a major engine-out service, with replacement of the crankshaft seal, and rebalancing of the carburettors.

The most recent MOT test was on 11 April 2016 at 63,437 miles, when it achieved a first-time pass with no advisories. It is now exempt from annual MOT testing on the basis of age. The matching Continental tyres are in as-new condition.

Accompanying the car is a Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche, all import documentation, some handbooks, one invoice for work carried out, and the jack and tool roll.

This Porsche 356 B 1600 is a very smart example of a coveted classic sports car. While it has been repainted since arriving in the UK, it appears to remain a highly original example in many other respects, with a particularly charming cabin. Fresh from a full service in August this year, this iconic air-cooled Porsche is ready to relish on the road, and is sure to delight its next owner whenever they choose to get behind the wheel.
