1962 MERCEDES-BENZ (W120) 180 C

This W120-generation Mercedes-Benz 180 C is a charming example of the lesser-seen ‘Ponton’-bodied saloon, presented in an attractive colour scheme, and benefitting from recent maintenance and light restoration. It is powered by a 1.9-litre four-cylinder engine, which drives the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission. The odometer indicates 61,599 km.

Nicknamed the ‘Ponton’ for its pontoon-like styling which brought together the previously separate bonnet, body and fenders into a single design, Mercedes-Benz’s range of saloons produced between 1953 and 1962 represented a radical departure from the marque’s previous vehicles, ushering in a new era of style while also reducing drag and increasing cabin space.

First registered in July 1962, this late-production 180 C was acquired by the seller’s company five years ago from an extensive private collection, and has been routinely maintained by their in-house team of mechanics in Greece.

Having been recently resprayed in a period-correct grey hue with a white roof, the car’s bodywork is in great shape, with no evidence of corrosion or any prior accident damage. The finish is also in very good order, and while it would benefit from a thorough polish to remove some minor swirl marks, there are no stone chips on scratches to its surface. As you may expect from a luxury saloon designed in the mid-1950s, chrome trim features heavily across this Mercedes’ exterior, and presents well, though there are a few minor dents on the bumpers, which is commensurate with the car’s age. This 180 C rides on a set of polished 13-inch chromed steel wheels, which are in excellent condition and are fitted with the correct body-coloured hubcaps.

Moving inside, the front and rear bench seats are trimmed in patterned grey cloth with vinyl backs and sides, and are in impressive condition, with no rips, tears or other damage. The elegant, uncluttered dashboard is also in great shape, and the cream steering wheel has held up particularly well over the years. Grey carpet is fitted throughout, and while there are a few marks and stains, this does not detract from the interior’s very smart overall appearance. This 180 C is fitted with a period-correct Aimor radio, and the seller states that all of the car’s interior buttons, switches and electrical items work without fault, and there are no warning lights displayed on the dashboard.

Described as providing an excellent driving experience, this classic German saloon’s mechanical components are in fine fettle, and have been serviced by the vendor’s team of technicians on an annual basis. Most recently, this comprised replacement of the engine oil and oil filter, along with the air filter, brake fluid, spark plugs and coolant.

The wheels are fitted with BF Goodrich Silvertown white wall tyres, which complement this Mercedes-Benz’s classic styling very well. All four date to 2018, and are in very good condition, with ample usable tread remaining. The car will be accompanied by its original owner’s manual, factory jack and spare wheel.
