1962 LAND ROVER SERIES IIA 88"

This 1962 Land Rover Series IIa is a superb example of the iconic British 4x4, presented in excellent condition throughout following a recent restoration. Under the bonnet sits a 2.2-litre inline-four engine producing around 62bhp, coupled with a four-speed manual transmission. The odometer currently indicates 64,865 miles.

First registered in December 1962, this 88-inch model Series IIa was supplied new to Loxhams of Preston as a soft-top vehicle, where it was purchased by a local jeweller, who proceeded to fit the car with a hard-top. The vehicle changed hands and was used as a daily driver before being dismantled and restored by Fylde Land Rover Services in 1985.

It was then passed on to its next owner, where it enjoyed regular use, before being traded back into Fylde Land Rover Services in 2011, where it was maintained, part-restored and re-fitted with an original soft-top. The car has since stayed within the family business, where it has been meticulously maintained and fitted with a new canvas roof.

The exterior of this Series IIA is in excellent condition, and to the best of the vendor’s knowledge, has never sustained any significant damage. The condition of the resprayed Marine Blue paintwork has been described as generally excellent, though the vendor notes that there is patina around the body panels as you would expect from an older repaint. The beige canvas roof has just been replaced with a brand-new item. The distinctive grille, headlight lenses and off-white wheels are all in excellent condition.

Moving inside, the condition of the Elephant Hide grey upholstery has been described as excellent, presenting in near perfect condition. Some age-related discolouration can be seen on the centre of the three-spoke steering wheel, though the touchpoints remain in good condition, and the instrument clusters present with clear covers and a glossy shine to their black surrounds. All of the switchgear is reported to be in good working order, with no electrical issues detected. The rear storage area is in superb condition, also featuring a spare wheel.

A full recommissioning service was undertaken in June 2016, with the vendor indicating that according to the recent MOT certificates, the car has only covered around 854 miles since. The previous documented service took place in April 2010 at 62,308 miles, where technicians at Fylde Land Rover Services changed the engine oil, filters and fluids, before lubricating the prop shafts, steering joints and road springs. Prior to this, in April 2009 at 60,288 miles, the nearside track rod end was replaced, before the front brakes were adjusted and a new rotor arm was fitted, alongside the usual engine oil, filter and consumables changes.

The most recent MOT test was on 11 December 2020 at 64,864 miles, which resulted in a clean pass with no advisories or defects. The wheels come wrapped with a set of Deestone tyres, which were fitted in 2016. The spare tyre is believed to have around half of its tread remaining.

Accompanying the vehicle is a hand-written history of the car from 1962 to 2016, as well as a folder containing 19 maintenance invoices from Fylde Land Rover Services, ten MOT certificates dating from April 2009 to December 2020, a sales and service invoice from 2016 and three previous copies of the logbook.

This Land Rover Series IIa is a charming classic 4x4, which benefits from two previous restorations but still rides on its factory chassis, rather than a galvanised alternative. A highly original example of the breed in respect of its specification, this Series IIa would make a wonderful addition to any collection, and is ready to use on or off the road as the next owner desires.
