1962 HILLMAN MINX RALLY EVOCATION

This 1962 Hillman Minx is a superb tribute to a Rootes Group rally support car, presented in impressive condition throughout, and with some wonderful features to make it a faithful homage. Under the bonnet is a 1.6-litre inline-four engine, coupled to a four-speed manual transmission. The odometer currently indicates 36,094 miles.

An original UK market car, this Minx was first registered in May 1962, and has just five former keepers on the V5C. It was previously purchased by renowned Jaguar specialist Guy Broad Spares, with the aim of converting it into a tribute to the Rootes Group’s 1960s rally support car. With that in mind, it now features a period roof rack with a wooden period-correct tool chest and various cans, plus extra driving lights at the front, metal rally plates, and a bundle of pit passes attached to the dashboard – not to mention the wonderful ‘Competition Department’ livery.

The bodywork of this Minx presents well, with flush shut lines, and with just one small dent in the offside front wing – which the vendor notes was placed intentionally. The blue paintwork has benefitted from a respray, and though a few age-related blemishes can be seen around the lower parts of the car, the condition of the finish has been described as generally excellent for its age. The vehicle rides on a set of 15-inch wheels, which present with some light marks and patches of oxidation around the edges, but are in good general condition. 

Inside, the seats and door cards are dressed in deep red leather, which has a smart general patina and just some light creasing. The vendor notes the dashboard has been restored, now presenting with neat blue paintwork on its exposed metal and with minimal wear to the original stereo and switchgear controls. All of the electrics are reported to be in good working order.

The most recent MOT test was on 25 March 2016 at 35,401 miles, which resulted in a clean pass with no advisories or defects. The tyres are reported to be near-new all around. A previous MOT record from 2009 incorrectly records the mileage as ‘336,699’, when the correct reading was understood to be 33,669 miles.

Accompanying the vehicle are various items, including an owner’s handbook, owner’s service book, and an owner’s workshop manual. There are also some old MOT certificates on file.

This Hillman Minx is a wonderful homage to a classic 1960s Rootes Group rally support car. Previously owned and restored by a renowned Jaguar specialist, and with a number of period-correct cosmetic enhancements, this Minx tribute would make a superb show car, or a head-turning British classic for spring and summer drives in warm weather.
