1961 TURNER MKII - GOODWOOD ELIGIBLE

KEY FACTS

  • A fantastic Goodwood-eligible, FIA-certified example of this British sports car, with interesting racing provenance and which has benefited from a comprehensive rebuild.
  • The car is thought to have competed in period club events during its early life, driven by the first registered keeper.
  • One of few Climax-engined cars still on the road, it changed hands multiple times, before being purchased by Richard Line around 20 years ago and restored from the ground up over several years.
  • It was rebuilt to FIA specification, retaining its original 1220cc Coventry Climax inline-four, now fed by twin Weber 40DCOE carburettors to produce 105bhp, coupled to a four-speed close-ratio BMC ‘B’ Series manual transmission.
  • Thought to be one of few remaining Turner MkIIs with racing provenance, it was invited to enter the Les Leston Cup, which took place at Goodwood’s 73rd Members Meeting, and in the 2009 Goodwood Revival Fordwater Trophy.
  • The car was looked after by WDK Motorsport in Stockbridge from 2012 to 2018, who ran it for the current owner in various prestigious race series across the UK, including the GT & Sports Car Cup, HRDC Allstars, the Motor Racing Legends Pre-63 GT and the HSCC Historic Road Sports Championship, where multiple class-wins and podiums were achieved.
  • Engine maintained by Coventry Climax specialist, David Whitehurst Racing.
  • It comes with a FIA Historic Technical Passport, valid until 31 December 2026 for period Class ‘GTS9’ Competition GT racing.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • The bodywork is finished in Navy Blue, complemented by an easily detachable white hard-top roof.
  • Inside is a single Jaz Products classic bucket seat with Titon harness.
  • There is wood dashboard trim and a three-spoke red leather-bound Moto-Lita steering wheel, plus a combination of Smiths and Elliot instrument dials.
  • The car comes with a valid FIA Historic Technical Passport, HSCC identification paperwork, its original logbook and various spare parts including four spare wheels.

CONDITION

  • The bodywork is in generally good order, though the front grille bars are slightly bent.
  • Its Navy Blue paintwork is in fair order, as you would expect from a historic racer, with superficial scratches, chips, ‘battle scars’, and prominent bubbling to the finish at the front and rear.
  • Inside, the Jaz Products seat has creasing and signs of use, but no excessive wear. The Titon harness is not valid after 2022
  • No electrical faults have been detected.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • During the full rebuild while owned by Richard Line, all steel panels were replaced, and the chassis was reconditioned to its original specification.
  • All mechanical, driveline, suspension, steering and brake components were replaced.
  • New torsion bars were fitted at the rear.
  • The weight was recorded at around 550kg.
  • It is reported to be mechanically sound, and was last driven in June 2021.

SUMMARY

This FIA-certified, Goodwood-eligible Turner MkII is a very usable historic racer, starting on the button and revving freely through to 6,500rpm. With a valid Historic Technical Passport and having been kept in good condition and regularly used on the track following its prior rebuild, this entry-level racing car could be a great opportunity for someone to get involved in classic motorsport, but is also a competitive car for a seasoned entrant.
