1961 PORSCHE-DIESEL STANDARD STAR 238

This Porsche Diesel Standard Star 238 is a rare and collectible classic tractor, which is in need of some mechanical attention and would be a great basis for a restoration. It is equipped with a 1.6-litre two-cylinder air-cooled diesel engine producing up to 25bhp, coupled with a manual transmission with eight forward and two reverse gears.

Understood to have been in production for around two years from 1961 to 1962, this Standard Star 238 has been with its latest private owner for over 20 years. A keen Porsche enthusiast, other cars in his collection have included the likes of the 356, as well as various GT and RS models, and he was also closely involved with Porsche Club GB and the early 911 registers.

The 238 featured a triple bearing crankshaft, oil centrifuge and hydraulic locking differential. This example is understood to have received an engine rebuild in the past. It is currently offered as a non-runner, though vendor notes the engine can be started with some assistance.

The frame and body remains in solid structural condition, with no indication of any major damage, and with only some surface rust visible. Most of the panels show peeling or bubbling in the red paintwork, though this is to be expected as the finish is believed to be original. The wheels appear to be in sound condition, though with some chips and surface rust around the rims.

The functional open-air seating area is complete and appears original, though the steering wheel, control knobs and gauges are all worn with age. However, there are no known electrical faults. The vendor notes that the tyres are aged and cracked, and so will need replacing before the tractor is put into service again.

This Porsche Diesel Standard Star 238 is a charming classic agricultural vehicle, which has a weathered patina, and would now benefit from some mechanical and cosmetic refurbishment. A solid candidate for a sympathetic restoration, once finished this Standard Star 238 would no doubt make a conversation-starting addition to any Porsche collection, or could of course be put into use as intended for light farming duties.
