1961 PORSCHE 356 B COUPE

KEY FACTS

  • A unique example of Porsche’s iconic 356 B, boasting an uprated and rebuilt ‘Super 90’ engine and some discreet modifications.
  • It is powered by an air-cooled 1.6-litre flat-four engine, delivering up to 90bhp and 98lb-ft of torque, via a four-speed manual transmission.
  • Originally registered overseas, this left-hand-drive 356 has been with its current keeper for the last five years and has covered under 1,000 miles in that time.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • The car is now finished in a deep black and has a grey vinyl-trimmed interior, while it rides on 15-inch wheels featuring chrome hubcaps and Porsche crest emblems.
  • Purchased by the current keeper when it was finished in an ‘outlaw’ specification, it has been carefully returned to a more original specification, but still features wider wheels, quad exhaust pipes and no bumper overriders.
  • The simple but elegant cabin features a body-coloured dashboard with a black vinyl top, green-font instruments, and a Porsche-branded stereo blanking plate.
  • Also included in the sale is a detailed service record from the previous owner, dating back to 2011 and showing major works such as the engine rebuild.

CONDITION

  • There is no known bodywork damage. The underside of the vehicle has been repaired in the past, which the owner believes was to rectify common corrosion.
  • The black paintwork presents well overall, with some stone chips to the front end and roof of the car. There are minor imperfections on each of the doors, and some cracked paint on the nearside front wing and rear quarter panels.
  • Moving inside, the cabin is in good condition. The front seats are believed to be original and accordingly have natural wear and ‘patina’. The top of the dashboard and rear seats were re-upholstered during current ownership and there is a small rip on the passenger door card.
  • The heater is reported to be non-functional, and the owner reports that the gearshift is slightly vague and may therefore benefit from tightening or re-bushing.
  • While the car is exempt from regular testing, its last MOT test was on 28 July 2017 at 61,186 miles, when a clean first-time pass was recorded.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • The car was last serviced in September 2021 at 61,887 miles by BC Mechanical Services, who replaced the brake master cylinder, brake shoes, fuel petcock, inner and outer CV boots, handbrake cables, HT leads and fuel filter.
  • Prior to this, an oil change was carried out in 2019. A service record from the previous owner is also included, showing some major works carried out.

SUMMARY

As the precursor to the 911, the 356 was Porsche’s inaugural production model. This stylish example benefits from an uprated and rebuilt engine as well as some discreet but appealing modifications. It is a well-maintained and highly usable car that is ready to be enjoyed, perhaps as a fun first foray into classic ownership, or to join a wider Porsche collection.
