This Volkswagen T1 Single Cab Pickup is a charming 1960 utility vehicle, which has recently been partially restored, and would make a great classic for the beach or as a promotional vehicle. It is powered by a rear-mounted 1.2-litre air-cooled flat-four, which is mated to a four-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels. The odometer indicates around 64,300 km, though this is not warranted.
Understood to be an original right-hand drive example, the chassis number corresponds to March 1960 production. This T1 was first registered in 1960 and was lightly restored by its previous owner before it was acquired by the seller around two years ago.
Today, the iconic bodywork presents very well and is not believed to have suffered from any accident damage – though there are some general dents in the metal load bed/ute tray, in line with this pickup’s earlier life as a working vehicle.
The ‘Postmaster General’ (PMG) red paintwork is described as being in good condition, having been recently resprayed to the exterior, with a bright, glossy appearance across the body. White painted bumpers and a matching white VW emblem on the nose provide a smart contrast to the bodywork. The truck will be handed over wearing a set of 15-inch steel wheels, repainted in white.
While this T1’s exterior has been refreshed, the cabin is said to remain highly original, with the dashboard still wearing its original coat of red paint and the inner door cards still in place, with visible wear and surface cracks in the grey finish.
This attractive patina is seen throughout the interior, and the gauges, two-spoke steering wheel and centrally-mounted ashtray all help to tell the story of a vehicle which celebrated its 60th birthday last year. The bench seat appears to have been re-trimmed in hardwearing grey vinyl, but looks very period-correct.
Mechanically, this pickup is believed to be in generally sound condition, and the current owner states that it runs and drives, but that it may require some additional work to be put through the registration process.
While its service history is unknown, it has been confirmed that the brakes were tended to by the vehicle’s previous owner in April 2017. Though the tyres shown in the gallery are aged and perished, the vendor will be providing a fresh set of tyres on the 15-inch steel wheels mentioned above.
Recognisable by its distinct styling and the split front window, the early generation of the VW Type 2 (T1) Kombi, Transporter and Pickup has become an icon thanks to its simplicity, versatility and reliability.
Once a tradesperson’s mainstay, T1 pickups such as this are now enjoyed by enthusiasts the world over. This lightly restored example will likely require only straightforward jobs to be put back into service, whether as a work truck, daily driver, promotional vehicle or weekend toy.
