1960 ALFA ROMEO GIULIETTA SPRINT

KEY FACTS

• A wonderful example of the beautiful Italian classic, benefitting from a recent restoration and boasting an uprated engine.
• Under the bonnet is the car’s original twin-cam inline-four, which has been enlarged to a 1.5-litre capacity and tuned to produce 95bhp, which is sent to the rear wheels via a retrofitted five-speed manual transmission.
• Built in January 1960, this Giulietta Sprint was delivered new to a dealer in Johannesburg, South Africa, where it was sold in August the same year.
• During its time in South Africa, the car was acquired by famed collector Waldie Greyvensteyn, who stored it as part of his impressive fleet of classic and collectable vehicles.
• Recently imported into the UK, the car is now registered with the DVLA as '377 XVR'.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

• Treated to a full ‘nut and bolt’ restoration in 2016, this Giulietta Sprint is finished in Rosso Alfa, features a red and grey vinyl-trimmed interior, and rides on the correct set of 15-inch steel wheels.
• It was also specified with the rare ‘disappearing rear seat’, which comprises a set of cushions which can be folded away under a boarded panel when not in use.
• During its earlier life, the car’s 1.3-litre engine was modified with a 1500cc Mondial ‘big bore’ conversion kit, and its original four-speed transmission was replaced with a five-speed unit.
• More recently, the original twin-choke Solex carburettor was replaced with a Weber item.
• The car will be accompanied by its factory jack and spare wheel, as well as documentation of its service history, its Certificato Di Origine from Alfa Romeo Classiche and a memory stick of photos detailing its restoration.

CONDITION

• The car’s bodywork is reported to be in excellent condition, and there is no evidence of any prior accident damage.
• Having been stripped back to bare metal and fully resprayed, the vibrant Rosso Alfa paintwork is in superb order, with only one small crack to the finish below the driver’s-side headlamp and a small chip beneath the bootlid, which has been touched in.
• All four wheels are in great shape, and while there is some minor bubbling on the rim of the rear passenger-side wheel, this is only visible upon close inspection.
• Inside, the cabin has been retrimmed in red and grey vinyl, and presents very well indeed, with no wear or damage to the upholstery. Elsewhere, the steering wheel, gear knob and other touchpoints have a charming light ‘patina’, and there is a crack in the horn push.
• There are no known electrical or mechanical faults with the vehicle.
• While it is not yet road-registered, the car’s last technical inspection was carried out in May 2021, with no faults being found.

SERVICE HISTORY

• Most recently, the car was treated to a rolling road tune by classic specialist Dave Baskerville Auto Services in April 2021.
• Prior to this, a full service was carried out by Varzi Classic Engineering in March 2021.

SUMMARY

This 1960 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint is an excellent example of the classic Bertone-designed sporting coupe. Presented in restored condition and boasting an uprated engine which now rivals the performance of the Veloce model, this is a charming classic that is now UK registered and will make a fine addition to the garage of any ‘Alfisti’.
