1959 VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE 1200

KEY FACTS

  • A superbly maintained and unmodified example of an early VW Beetle; one of the most recognisable cult classics.
  • Under the bonnet sits a 1.2-litre air-cooled flat-four engine, driving the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission.
  • The car has been off road and dry stored for 40 years, during which time it received an extensive restoration.
  • It has been in the current ownership for a remarkable 53 years.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • This example is finished in Mango Green with a matching green and cream interior.
  • It is offered as per the original mechanical specifications, with no modifications.
  • The car is accompanied by the original handbook and service book with main dealer stamps up to 85,000 miles, as well as the factory-supplied jack, spare wheel and wheel brace.

CONDITION

  • There is no known bodywork damage.
  • The car was fully shot-blasted with the body removed and resprayed approximately 20 years ago.
  • The Mango Green paintwork presents superbly, with a high shine and no significant marks or blemishes. Only some natural pitting on the chrome door handles is present, commensurate with the age of the vehicle.
  • Moving inside, the re-trimmed green and cream cabin is in excellent condition with no wear or discolouration.
  • The owner states that the left-hand indicator can be slow to operate due to a lack of use, but otherwise there are no known mechanical or electrical faults.
  • Due to the age of the vehicle, it is exempt from mandatory MOT testing.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • The last documented service was in February 1979 at 85,017 miles by Pooles Fareham Ltd, who inspected and lubricated the vehicle; though of course, the car has been extensively restored over the last 40 years.
  • Since the refurbishment, it has been kept in dry storage as a cherished collector’s item.
