1959 MERCEDES-BENZ UNIMOG (TYPE 411)

This Mercedes-Benz Unimog (Type 411) is a very well-presented example of the classic 4x4 utility vehicle, which has been the subject of an extensive restoration. It is powered by a 1.8-litre ‘OM636’ inline-four diesel engine, producing up to 30hp, driven through a six-speed manual transmission. Its odometer shows 859km, which may be the mileage covered since the refurbishment.

The original ‘Universalmotorgerät’ was developed primarily as a towing tractor and also as a transport for equipment, with both military and civilian use in mind. Introduced in 1956, the Type 411 model retained much of the original aesthetic, but had significant mechanical upgrades.

This Unimog is understood to have been first registered in May 1959, and it has been in the seller’s collection for nearly one year. While there is no paperwork with the car other than its German title and 2015 GTÜ certificate, it is understood that the previous owner commissioned significant restoration of the chassis, bodywork, and mechanicals – with the vendor estimating that €20,000 has been spent to bring the Unimog up to its current impressive condition.

Today, this Type 411 Open Cab Flatbed model presents in good order, repainted in a period-correct shade of green, and with good panel fit. While not perfect, there are only relatively minor scratches and scuffs in the paintwork, commensurate with a vehicle that has been refurbished but also used sparingly since then. The chassis and suspension has been finished in dark red, while the heavy duty 18-inch wheels are painted in a more vibrant shade.

In the cabin, the two seats have been re-trimmed in durable black vinyl, while the interior surfaces have been refinished in the same green as the bodywork. The gear shift, four-wheel-drive control levers, and steering wheel are all likely original given their patinated appearance, and the instruction symbols have been repainted on the centre console panel in yellow. Its green tarpaulin-style hood is in fair condition, with some wear to the transparent window panels, but the fastenings are in good order, and it fits well over the frame.

While no service history is present, the Unimog passed a German GTÜ roadworthiness check in May 2015 when it was last registered. It would require a fresh service and new safety inspection before taking to the road again – and the vendor will have the service carried out if the Unimog meets its reserve price.

This Mercedes-Benz Unimog (Type 411) is an early example of the classic German utility vehicle. While just under 40,000 units of the 411 model were built, fewer survive, and it is becoming harder to find vehicles such as this in very good condition. Given its impressive restored condition, it would make a fun exhibit for classic car shows, but of course could also be put into service as a robust and capable agricultural or service vehicle.
