1959 ALFA ROMEO GIULIETTA SZ RECREATION

This Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ is a stunning recreation of the beautiful classic competition car, with a body and chassis built by the famous Giorgio Greppi. It is powered by a 1.3-litre twin-cam four-cylinder engine, which was taken from a Guilietta Sprint Veloce and produces around 120hp. This drives the rear wheels via a four-speed close-ratio transmission.

Commissioned by a member of the national Alfa Romeo owner’s club and later taken on by the club’s former president, this replica SZ’s bodywork was crafted by Greppi in Colico, Italy between 1990 and 1993. On its completion, the body was then sent to Bernd Salewsky of BSM Salewsky Motorsport, who completed the car using the mechanical components from an Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Veloce, which its owner had previously damaged during a race event.

The seller then acquired the car in 2004, following the death of its previous owner, and is now offering it for sale with FIA paperwork and Scheda di Omologazione. It also comes with a German vehicle registration document with road approval.

Thanks to Greppi’s painstaking work and the careful stewardship of its owners, this SZ’s shapely aluminium bodywork remains in very good condition. The vibrant blue paintwork is in fair shape, with a few marks including chips and surface cracks on the driver’s-side front wing and door and flaking beside the boot lid; however, it presents well overall, and the exterior trim is also in good order. The car rides on a set of original 15-inch magnesium alloy wheels, which are free of any noticeable scratches or scrapes.

In the cabin, this classic racer is fitted with a pair of black vinyl-clad bucket seats, which feature basket-weave centres. Both are very smart, with no rips or tears to their surfaces, and a pair of light grey Schroth Racing harnesses help to keep the driver and passenger in place during even the most competitive races. Ahead, the sculpted steering wheel is clad in black leather and presents well, while the FIA-approved Werner Hemmerle roll cage is also in good order, with some general scratches and signs of wear to its surfaces, but no structural damage. All of the switches and electrical items work as they should, and the seller does not report any faults with the car’s controls.

Mechanically, this SZ recreation is in good running order. As well as its Sprint Veloce engine, it is also equipped with a racing gearbox with an Alquati gearset, a modified rear axle with a limited-slip differential, and reinforced axle shafts. All four wheels are fitted with Dunlop Racing tyres, which appear to be in good condition with ample tread remaining.

This 1959 Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ Recreation is a gorgeous tribute to the rare and highly valuable Italian racer. Presented in good order throughout and built to a high standard, it is fully FIA certified, allowing its next owner to enter it into a number of historic events, where they can fully exploit its performance without the fear of damaging one of the genuine 200 cars produced.
