1958 VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE

KEY FACTS

• A wonderful example of the characterful ‘people’s car’, benefitting from a bare-metal restoration and a more powerful engine.
• Under the rear engine lid is a new 1.6-litre air-cooled flat-four, which was supplied by The VW Engine Company, and drives the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission.
• This left-hand drive Beetle left the factory in February 1959, and was sold new in Sweden, before being imported into the UK and registered with the DVLA in December 2005.
• The odometer displays 3,029km, which is believed to be the distance covered since the engine was replaced.
• It was fully restored by model specialist ‘Beetle Magic’, at a cost of approximately £14,000.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

• While it was originally finished in black, this Beetle has since been repainted in a charming shade of blue, and features a retrimmed interior with grey herringbone and blue vinyl upholstery and blue carpets.
• It rides on the correct set of body-coloured steel wheels, which are in great shape, and while there is a small dent on the front passenger-side hubcap, this should be relatively easy to replace.
• As well as its replacement engine, the car also benefits from a disc brake conversion, and is fitted with a sliding ‘Webasto’ sunroof’.
• The car has also been tastefully lowered, and its wheels have been pushed further out for a more purposeful look.
• This Beetle will be accompanied by its certificate of production from the Volkswagen Automuseum and a folder of paperwork documenting its history.

CONDITION

• There is no known bodywork damage; however the bonnet, doors and wings were replaced during the car’s restoration.
• Fully resprayed inside and out, the blue paintwork is in excellent condition, with a smooth and glossy appearance around the car and only a handful of minor blemishes and stone chips.
• Having been fully re-trimmed, the cabin is in superb order, with no evidence of wear to the upholstery or interior elements.
• There are no known electrical or mechanical faults.
• While it is exempt due to its age, the car’s last MOT test was conducted on 12 September 2019 at an indicated 1,638km, resulting in a clean, first-time pass.
• The vendor will confirm the service history in due course.
