1958 MERCEDES-BENZ 190 SL

This 1958 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL is an elegant classic convertible, with a sleek silver finish and a re-trimmed interior. Under the bonnet is a 1.9-litre ‘M121’ inline-four, coupled to a four-speed manual transmission. The odometer currently indicates 42,129 km.

First registered in Germany in 1958, it is understood to have remained there for nearly 20 years, before being exported to Canada in 1977. It stayed in North America until February 1997, when it was shipped over to the UK and onward to Ireland and re-registered. The car has been with its current keeper for the last 15 years. 

The stylish bodywork of this SL presents very well, and its sleek silver paintwork has previously been repainted. The vendor reports that it now presents very well but with some micro-blistering, along with a few very small blemishes on the front end. The chrome body trim is all in excellent condition, though some very slight discoloration can be seen around the rear badging. The black soft top roof appears to fit very well and the rear window is free of any clouding, though a few light marks can be seen in the fabric. The car rides on a set of 13-inch wheels, all of which are in great shape. 

Inside, the re-trimmed red upholstery is in good condition, with just some light creasing and a couple of surface blemishes to the back supports and seat bases near the floor. The door cards and dashboard are in very good order, though a few marks are visible where the trim meets the dashboard metal. The switchgear looks like it is probably original, with some wear and pitting of the finishes, though all of the electrics are believed to work as they should.

Due to its age, the car has not required any recent mandatory roadworthiness inspections, but there are no known mechanical faults. Accompanying the vehicle are the original owner’s manual and a record of maintenance invoices dating from 1974 to 2015, and which are shown in the gallery.

This Mercedes-Benz 190 SL is an elegant and sophisticated cruiser, with a good history file and a smart re-trimmed interior. This classic roadster would be a stylish addition to any Mercedes-Benz collection, and should prove a thoroughly delightful driving experience out on the open road.
