KEY FACTS
- A very good example of the quirky classic utility van; this DKW is an intriguing post-war vehicle that is a precursor to modern MPVs and people carriers.
- It is powered by an overhauled matching-numbers 900cc three-cylinder unit from the DKW F9, producing around 32bhp, coupled to a four-speed manual transmission.
- It was delivered new in 1957 to J. Bourlet in Liège, though it was kept in dry storage from the early 1970s, following the death of its first owner.
- It was recovered in 2008 and has since been refurbished, now presenting in good order throughout.
EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES
- Its unusual one-box design for the era meant that the Schnellaster had a transverse two-stroke engine at the front, with front-wheel drive, enabling the rear to have a flat floor and a flexible loading area.
- The DKW has trailing arm rear suspension with springs in the cross bar assembly.
- It has been retro-fitted with hazard lights, but otherwise remains true to its original specification.
CONDITION
- No known bodywork damage, with the original factory numbers still visible within the doors and under the bonnet.
- Its resprayed blue paintwork is in good condition, with just a few minor blemishes around the rear badging and near the side repeaters.
- Its original blue upholstery is in impressive order for its age, though the vendor has reported a few small holes in the outer edge of the driver’s seat cover.
- No electrical faults have been detected.
SERVICE HISTORY
- In 2013, the engine was removed by a local mechanic, and then sent to the specialist Dipl. Ing. Güldenstein from Hamburg for an overhaul, as it had seized during its time in storage.
- The brakes have been refurbished, while the tyres and battery have been replaced.
- The fluids have also recently been changed.
SUMMARY

It is now in very good condition, and is ready to be enjoyed as a charming and curiously styled transporter.
