1956 PORSCHE-DIESEL ALLGAIER AP22

This 1956 Porsche-Diesel Allgaier AP22 is a classic farming vehicle, presented in superb order and ready to enjoy on or off the field — although it would also make a great addition to any collection of Porsche models. It is equipped with an air-cooled 1.5-litre two-cylinder engine producing around 22hp, coupled to a five-speed dog-leg manual transmission. It is understood that the motor has been rebuilt, and that the 21 hours showing on the engine clock is since that work was carried out.

The tractor was first put into use in January 1956 and has had three previous owners. The seller purchased the vehicle from the estate of the previous owner around six months ago, and has driven it sparingly. The tractor has evidently been recently restored, including refurbishment of the body, paint, and running gear.

The paintwork is described as being in excellent condition, and the seller states that the panels are all rust-free. The green finish looks smooth and glossy, and it is accented by a seat trimmed in bright red vinyl with grey piping. It is fitted with 16-inch wheels at the front and 32-inch wheels at the rear, which are painted in red to complement the seat colour.

The metal finishes and underbody are in good order, and the chrome accents and badges are in great shape. Ahead of the driver, the dashboard panel is in good condition, and the levers, switches and instruments are working perfectly. While the driver sits centrally, there are wooden slat seats over each rear wheel to accommodate passengers.

The engine has recently been inspected and started readily from both hot and cold. The fluid levels were accurate, and tractor was run stationary at temperature for around 20 minutes without overheating. Its compression ratios evidence the engine rebuild, and the motor also has new belts, a new fan, and an upgraded starter motor and charging system. The fluids were clean, the battery was charged as normal and the pre-heater system worked as it should.

During the inspection and test run, the gears changed smoothly and the clutch bite was excellent, with no slippage or synchro mesh crunches occurring. The differential has been replaced in previous years, and is running well. There is little in the way of historical paperwork with the tractor, but this AP22 does come with an owner’s manual and log book, as well as an inspection report.

Originally designed by Dr Ferdinand Porsche in the 1930s – and essentially intended to be a ‘people’s tractor’ just as the earliest VWs were the ‘people’s car’ – this 1956 Porsche-Diesel Allgaier AP22 represents an opportunity to acquire not only a piece of Porsche history but also an intriguing agricultural machine in its own right.

Please note: the seller is offering free delivery to the UK mainland in the event of a successful auction.
