1953 MG TD MIDGET

KEY FACTS

  • A very smart example of the charming British classic, presented in good condition and supplied with the lesser-seen top box and wet weather gear.
  • It is powered by a 54bhp 1.3-litre ‘XPAG’ inline-four, which drives the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission.
  • First registered in August 1953, this MG TD has had only four previous keepers from new.
  • Having spent the last 15 years in dry storage due to the ill health of its previous owner, the car was acquired by the seller approximately two years ago, and has only been driven very occasionally.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • It rides on the correct set of 15-inch steel wheels with chromed hubcaps, which are in fair shape but would benefit from being refinished as there is some minor surface corrosion on their rims.
  • This TD is currently fitted with a replacement engine. However, the original unit will also be supplied by the seller.
  • The car will be accompanied by its handbook, workshop manual, a number of past MOT test certificates and its original buff logbook.

CONDITION

  • No known bodywork damage.
  • Having been previously resprayed, the black paintwork is in good overall condition, with only a few minor blemishes in line with the car’s age.
  • The exterior trim presents well, and while the chromed brightwork is lightly pitted, this adds to the car’s largely original character.
  • The interior trim and red leather upholstery are believed to be entirely original, and have a well-worn appearance and ‘patina’ on their surfaces. As is to be expected there are some cosmetic issues, such as deteriorated stitching on the seats and lifting of the vinyl on the dashboard, which the buyer may wish to attend to in due course.
  • Furthermore, the red generator warning light is missing from the dashboard; however replacement items are available from a number of marque specialists.
  • There are no known electrical faults with the vehicle.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • While this classic MG has spent much of the last 15 years in storage, it has been fitted with a replacement fuel pump, a new battery and four new tyres.
  • The car is reported to be in good running order, with no known mechanical issues.

SUMMARY

Featuring a lightly restored exterior and a fully original cabin, this 1953 MG TD Midget is a good, usable example of the classic British sports car. Recently recommissioned and ready to enjoy, it will make a charming addition to any garage, offering the chance to step back in time to a far simpler age of motoring.
