1953 MG TD MIDGET

KEY FACTS

  • A wonderful, restored example of the characterful British classic, which has been doted on by its current owner and is offered for sale in excellent mechanical and cosmetic order.
  • Under the bonnet is the 54bhp 1.3-litre ‘XPAG’ inline-four, which drives the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission.
  • Previously restored by noted hot rod builder Dave Simard for his father, this TD remains in excellent condition, and its engine and transmission were rebuilt in the late 1990s.
  • The seller has enjoyed the car for the last 21 years, taking home ‘Best in Class’ awards from the British Cars of New Hampshire shows in 2002 and 2003.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • Finished in black with the correct red-painted front grille slats, this TD also features a red leather interior and a tan canvas soft top.
  • It is also equipped with an optional cabin heater and a ceramic-coated exhaust manifold, while the car’s comfort has been enhanced with the addition of wind wings and a central arm rest in the cabin.
  • This TD will be accompanied by a T-Series handbook and operational manual, as well as an MG TD/TF workshop manual.

CONDITION

  • There is one small dent on the rear passenger-side fender, but no other known bodywork flaws.
  • Having previously been resprayed, the paintwork is in excellent condition, with no significant marks or blemishes to speak of.
  • All of the exterior trim is in great shape, and the chromed brightwork has been polished to a high shine.
  • The tan soft top is also very smart, with no rips, tears or other damage.
  • Retrimmed in red leather, the cabin presents very well indeed, and while there is some minor creasing to the seats’ upholstery, this is in line with the car’s use and age.
  • There are no known mechanical faults, however the seller notes that the tachometer swings wildly and likely requires a new cable, and the wiper motor is also a little slow.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • This TD’s most recent routine maintenance was carried out by the seller in November 2020 at an indicated 18,600 miles. As well as changing the engine oil and filter, they also topped off the brake fluid, filled the carburettor with oil and cleaned the air filter.
  • Prior to this, the vendor carried out the same work in November 2019 and November 2018.
  • During their ownership, the seller has also replaced the tyres, fitted a new water pump and replaced the original oil filter with a modern ‘spin-on’ item, though the original cartridge will also be supplied with the car.

SUMMARY

Benefitting from a prior restoration and maintained to a high standard by its enthusiastic current owner, this 1953 MG TD Midget is an excellent example of the usable British classic. Ready to enjoy immediately, it is sure to attract admiring glances whenever it takes to the road.
