1948 PONTIAC TORPEDO 'SILVER STREAK' SEDAN

KEY FACTS

• An honestly presented post-war classic, which benefits from a repaint in Silver Blue and fantastic chromework.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

• With the adoption of the more prominent horizontal grille styling with vertical shafts, the Series 25 Torpedo features the associated ‘Silver Streak’ hood badging.
• This Pontiac remains highly original, though it has been treated to a full repaint in Ford Light Ice Blue, as well as refurbishment of various body trims and chrome.
• It rides on colour-coded painted steel wheels, with original Pontiac hubcaps, and shod with whitewall tyres.
• Inside, there is a velour cloth upholstery, vinyl door cards, and a colour-matched painted dashboard. All of the switches, dials, and door furniture appear to be original.
• There are no known modifications or upgrades.
• The car comes with an original 1948 Pontiac owner’s manual, plus the title document.
• The additional transmission stored in the trunk is included, but the seller does not know of its make or original fitment.

CONDITION

• There does not appear to be any prior bodywork damage.
• Its paintwork is in generally excellent condition, though does have a few minor chips following the respray, which are clearly shown in the photo gallery. The car comes with the remainder of the Ford Light Ice Blue paint in two cans for touch-ups, so these can be rectified in due course.
• The interior trim is in good condition overall, and much of it may well be original. There are no noticeable rips or tears in the cloth seat covers, though there are general signs of use and ageing throughout the cabin.
• The radio knobs have melted in the Arizona sun, and the steering wheel has cracked in the outer ring - though the steel band within the wheel is still holding it together under the leather cover.

SERVICE HISTORY

• The last formal service was in August 2016, when the oil was changed, the radiator was drained and refilled, and the brakes were adjusted, carried out at Pit Stop Service in Pine City, MN.
• The seller also states that a new carburettor has recently been fitted, and that a new battery was installed in 2021.

SUMMARY

This Pontiac Torpedo 2-door ‘Silver Streak’ Sedan is a stunning late ‘40s cruiser, which benefits from fully refreshed paintwork and chrome, and a good set of tires. While the interior is believed to remain largely original, this car’s shining exterior will turn heads wherever it goes, and the seller also reports that it is a joy to drive.
