1924 DODGE BROTHERS SERIES 116 ROADSTER

This 1924 Dodge Brothers Series 116 is a rare example of a robust and spritely pre-war roadster, which would make a great project for 2021. Under the bonnet is a 3.5-litre inline-four petrol engine, producing around 35hp when new, coupled to a three-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels.

Understood to be an original right-hand drive model built for the Australian market, this Series 116 model was imported to the UK in 1993, and was acquired by the second UK owner five years ago. It has been in storage with occasional running during their ownership, alongside other vintage and veteran cars in the collection.

The bodywork is described as being in good condition, though the paintwork is now weathered following a repaint in the 1980s. There is flaked paint and chips in a few places, and some micro-blistering and flaking on the bonnet and wings where the paint has reacted over time.

Given that this car will celebrate its 100th birthday in 2024, it arguably deserves a proper cosmetic restoration to bring it back to its former glory - though of course that is at the next owner’s discretion. The chromework is worn and pitted in places, and again would benefit from re-plating, but ultimately presents with a worn patina that may appeal to many prospective owners.

In the cabin, the bench seat and door panels have previously been re-trimmed, and present in worn but perfectly functional condition. The rear of the bench has cracked slightly, and there is also a small hole on the front section, but overall the interior looks very respectable given the age of this pre-war classic. Its 12-volt electrical system is reported to be in full working order, and the convertible vinyl hood is sound, with only a few minor splits.

The last maintenance was carried out in February 2020, when the owner performed an oil change, and a general mechanical inspection and brake check. The car has not been driven on the road while in their collection, and is understood to have been in storage since 2010 with the previous owner as well. The vendor notes that the water pump and carburettor certainly need attention, and that the fuel and coolant system would also benefit from refurbishment. All of the tyres hold air, but are over 25 years old.

Accompanying the car is a mechanical handbook, as well as various historical documents pertaining to the car. There is no specific service history, however. In the cabin, what is believed to be the original dealer plaque - showing ‘Standardised Motors Ltd’ of Castlereagh, Sydney - is mounted on the dashboard.

This Dodge Brothers Series 116 Roadster presents as a highly original example, believed to retain the correct type engine and transmission, and with a strong chassis. The Dodge Brothers’ cars were the first to use all-steel body panels, and this Series 116 is also reported to be free from any rot in the wood underneath. It is a charming pre-war vintage roadster, which would no doubt make a great project for 2021; being a solid basis for a sympathetic restoration or for a more comprehensive strip and rebuild - ready for its centenary year in 2024.
