The M Collection

The M Collection

While it was put into production in 1984, the BMW E28 M5 did not receive its motor show debut until February 1985 in Amsterdam. Inspired by this significant 40-year anniversary for the marque’s hallowed division, Collecting Cars is offering ‘The M Collection’; a curated selection of more than 25 iconic machines from BMW M, spanning more than four decades of performance. This special assembly of M cars includes some of the most lauded modern classics, with a total estimated value of more than £1.5 million.

Leading the way both in terms of rarity and value is the 1980 BMW M1. This period-perfect supercar is one of just 399 road cars, equipped with the high-revving 3.5-litre ‘M88’ straight-six and fitted with the famed 16-inch Campagnolo alloy wheels. The car on offer is understood to have had just three owners from new, and is finished in the striking Henna Red.

1980 BMW M1

One model which is rarer than many enthusiasts might think is the 2003 BMW E46 M3 CSL. Just 1,383 examples were produced, making it less common than the likes of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, and almost as hard to find as a Porsche Carrera GT or Ferrari F40. Several cars have been consigned to the M Collection sale, with the one in Germany having covered just 39,000km, and remaining in superb condition.

Also on offer is a 2016 BMW M4 GTS. Equipped with a raft of lightweight carbon-fibre elements, the GTS also has an uprated engine with innovative water injection to enable higher boost pressures, as well as fitment of adjustable coil-overs on all four corners, revisions to the chassis and damper calibration, and bespoke anti-roll bars.

1988 BMW (E30) M3 Convertible

It wouldn’t be an M Collection with an E30-generation car among the consignments, and going under the hammer from Germany is a highly usable 1988 BMW M3 Convertible. One of only 781 such cars built, it is finished in the attractive combination of Macau Blue over Lotus White leather, and benefits from an overhaul of the engine and gearbox.

Returning to the 40th anniversary of the M5’s motor show debut, the 1988 BMW E28 M5 listed in the UK boasts intriguing provenance, having previously been used as a film car in 2018’s ‘Mission Impossible: Fallout’ for the chase scene filmed in Paris.

These are just a handful of the highlights of The M Collection. Be sure to check out all of the consignments below, and make sure you don’t miss the chance to bid on your dream M car.

The auctions commence on Sunday 20 April and will end on Sunday 27 April.
