It’s sometimes hard to set aside what you have read about certain cars.

The Ferrari 456 GT for example had a few niggles that needed ironing out when it started out in life. The most common complaint being with the window regulators.

Thankfully time is a great healer and all these gremlins have now been resolved and as I walk into V-Management to be greeted by this Le Mans Blu 456 GT all of those thoughts evaporate as I am consumed with the beauty of the Pininfarina designed body of this stunning GT.

The design has really stood up well and the car looks particularly good in a darker colour such as this Le Mans Blu. The forecast for the day looks decidedly ‘iffy’ so I hastily grab the keys, load my camera bag into the back of the car and head out to some quieter roads to get some filming done with the car before the heavens open.

What strikes me immediately as I find my driving position is how quickly I feel at home in the driving seat of this car. As Ferrari’s go the 456 GT is more approachable and friendly compared to other Ferrari’s of this era. It’s immediately likeable and will get on with all the family.

That doesn’t mean you’re making a compromise, far from it. You still have a 5.5-litre V12 producing 436bhp and a beautiful gated 6 speed manual gearbox. The clutch isn’t heavy, the hydraulic steering is on the right side of light without being desensitised by modern drive by wire and so it is an absolute delight to drive. It’s not too big either, meaning you can comfortably drive in town or fire it down a country road without fear of having your wing mirror taken off.

Perhaps though my favourite thing about the 456 GT is it’s image. It’s still feels special without being flash or brash. Park it outside Hotel de Paris in Monte-Carlo or the School gates and it will do either with ample panache. The 456 is one of those cars that looks good in virtually any setting. Pure understated class!
